Leading international civil servant, scholar, writer, teacher in the area of international monetary law, Sir Joseph Gold, presently senior consultant at the International Monetary Fund, served on the staff of the Fund since the fall of 1946 and was its general counsel for nearly 20 years. He received his law degree with first-class honors from the University of London, his LL.M. degree from London and an S.J.D. degree from Harvard University. In the 1930's he lectured in law at the University of London and assisted in the founding of the Modern Law Review. Over the years, he has lectured at U.S. law schools, including Michigan, Harvard, Columbia and SMU, as well as numerous other law schools throughout the world. His list of publications, spanning 30 years, is astounding, not only with respect to volume, but particularly with respect to the relevance and insight. No other individual has made as major a contribution to the development of international monetary law as has Sir Joseph Gold. His achievements have been recognized by being knighted by Her Majesty the Queen of England, by special recognition from Columbia University, and by being one of the guest lecturers two years ago at the prestigious Hague Academy of International Law. In addition to his scholarly achievements, Sir Joseph has been a most kind friend to Southern Methodist University and to the SMU Law School. He was most instrumental in the organization of the SMU Institute on International Finance and the SMU Law School's academic conferences in international law, has been active in establishing an international law series for the SMU Press, and has been a lecturer on campus and in the local Dallas community during his frequent visits to Dallas. Because of Sir Joseph's recognized substantial contribution to the international monetary order, Southern Methodist University is proud to confer upon Sir Joseph Gold the Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa.
